What 'erased' actually means
A factory reset is not data erasure. Off-the-shelf forensic tools can recover data from a reset device in minutes. True data erasure overwrites every addressable sector — and for SSDs, triggers the cryptographic erase that makes the underlying NAND unreadable.
MakeITgood follows NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev. 1, the standard recognised by UK regulators and most enterprise buyers. Drives that fail erasure verification are physically shredded — never returned to circulation.
